어떤 장르의 음악을 듣고 ‘이해하였다’라고 느끼는 것은 과연 무엇일까? 각자 느끼는 바가 다르겠지만 그 중에서도 패턴을 인식하였을 때 대체로 ‘이해하였다’라고 말할 수 있다. 생각해 보면 ‘혼돈’이란 패턴을 인식할 수 없는 상태를 의미하기도 한다. 패턴은 예측의 근거로 삼기도 한다. 그리고 그 패턴에서 지각과 행위의 일반원칙을 이끌어내어 이를 예상의 근거로 삼기도 하며 또 그 속에서 새로운 패턴을 창출해 내어 마침내 이해 가능한 복잡함을 만들어 내기도 한다.
이 작품에서 선율의 움직임은 이러한 패턴의 흐름과 많은 연관성을 갖고 있다. 그리고 시간이 지남에 따라 그 움직임에 변형이 이루어지지만 이 변형은 우리의 인식체계 내에서 분명히 예상의 틀 안에 갇혀있게 된다. 즉 우리가 음악을 들을 때 편안한 집중을 할 수 있는 것은 아마 그 예상의 틀 안에 우리의 인식체계가 작동되고 있기 때문일 것이다.
전체적인 이 작품에서의 울림은 화성과 화성간의 지점을 어떻게 자연스럽게 연결하느냐에 관한 문제였는데, Interpolation 에 의한 함수 값과 음의 움직이는 방향에 대한 이미지를 결합하여 매우 우연적이지만 일정한 형태의 화성을 만들어 내도록 하였다.
작품해설(영문)
What does it mean to "understand" music? Although the definition must vary from one individual to another, it is essential to recognize different patterns in different pieces. Chaos refers to a state in which no pattern can be discerned. A pattern serves as a foundation for projection. Principles and rules can be extracted from a pattern, upon which a new pattern can be created and layered to form an understanding.
The movements of the notes in this piece form a noticeable pattern. These movements change and create variations, but such variations are enclosed within the framwork of projection. We may be able to comfortably concentrate on the music because our cognitive system is activated within this framework of projection.
The composer focused on smoothly interconnecting one chord with another. The combination of function values based on interpolation and the movements of the notes led to the creation of chords in a spontaneous yet consistent manner.
