우리의 선조들은 이웃과의 관계에서도 두레, 품앗이, 그리고 울력에서 보이듯이 서로 다르지만 아껴주고 서로 의지하고 포용하는 아름다운 전통을 가지고 있었다. 그것은 개개인의 ‘선택에 의한 이웃’이 아닌 그 주위의 이웃한 ‘주어진 이웃’에 대한 아름다운 관습이다. 이처럼 주요 음이 진행하면 자동적으로 그 주위의 음들은 주위의 위성음 또는 이질적인 이웃음으로 존재하며 그것은 거부할 수 없이 주요음과 함께 들려진다. 이웃은 다양한 리듬과 음색으로 나타나고 사라지면서, 이웃한 요소들의 등장과 소멸에도 불구하고 주요한 아이디어나 진행은 변함이 없이 전진한다. 우리의 삶에도 이웃하는 것은 좋든 나쁘든 감수해야 하는 것이 아닐까? 이런 생각으로 이 곡의 진행을 생각하였다. 이질적이고 부자연스런 이웃도 함께 존재한다는 것을 인정하고 그 이웃을 포용하며 소통하면서 이끌어가야 하는 것이 아닐까.
작품해설(영문)
The Koreans long had the beautiful tradition of caring for their neighbors, depending on neighbors, and embracing neighbors, despite the fact that everyone as individuals was unique. This can be seen in their relationships with neighbors. They formed farmers’ cooperative groups; neighbors helped each other out on their farms; and entire villages worked together to do common projects. It was a beautiful custom of caring for ‘given neighbors’ around themselves rather than ‘neighbors selected’ by individuals.
As the leading tone proceeds, semi tones surrounding the leading tone come out automatically as auxiliary tones or extraneous neighboring tones, which are heard together with leading tones. Neighbors appear in diverse rhythms and timbres, and they even disappear. Despite appearance and disappearance of neighboring elements, the main idea continues or progress develops all the same.
We have to put up with things we neighbored with all our lives, regardless of whether they are good or bad, and this was the primary logic by which I mapped out how to proceed with this piece. We must concede that there are neighbors who are different from us and who feel strange to us, and we should lead them by embracing and communicating with them.
