나희덕 시인은 그의 시집「야생사과」의 시작노트에서 낯선 대륙에서 처음으로 야생사과를 맛 본 후의 느낌을 ‘야생의 열매를 쪼는 새들처럼 어눌한 듯 자유로웠다’고 표현하였다. 익숙한 삶과 언어를 떠나 이방인이 되어보는 경험은 영혼의 입자를 새롭게 만들어 다른 삶으로 스며들게 해 주었다’고……나도……시인처럼 시큼하고 떫은 야생사과를 베어 물어보고 싶었다! 시인처럼 ‘봄 그늘에 앉아 또 다른 나를 기다리면서......’
총 4개의 짧은 악장들로 구성하였고, 1악장에서는 해가 저물어가는 이국에서의 정취를 화성적인 색채 변화로, 2악장에서는 개미들이 오글거리며 단물을 빨 때의 소리와, 시인이 개미들을 훑어내고 한 입 베어 무는 소리를 형상화했고, 3악장에서는 길들여지지 않은 야생사과의 달고 시고 쓴 맛을 기타의 두 줄을 꼰 상태에서 나는 챙챙거리는 소리로, 4악장에서는 들녘의풀들이 바람에 흔들리는 자유로움을 담아보았다.
작품해설(영문)
Poet Na Hi-deok said that she "felt hesitantly free like a bird pecking at wild fruit" the moment she first tasted a wild apple in a strange land. She added that the experience of leaving behind a familiar life and language and becoming a total stranger renewed the particles of her soul and enabled her to blend into a new lifestyle. It gave me the urge to bite into a sour, bitter wild apple! Just as the poet "sat in the shadow of the spring and waited for the rise of another aspect of herself"...... this piece consists of four short movements. The first movement portrays the sunset in an exotic land with dynamic chord tones; the second movement embodies the sounds of ants sucking the juice out of a wild apple and the poet brushing off the ants and biting into the apple; the third movement depicts the sweet, sour, and bitter flavors of a wild apple by twisting two guitar strings into one and creating sharp sounds; and the fourth movement portrays grasses in the field freely swaying in the wind.
