첼로와 오케스트라를 위한 '탄식의 노래'(Song of lament)는 이 전에 작곡한 실내악 곡 “아우성”의 연장이다. 우리가 잊고 살아가는 애국 열사들의 삶과 원치 않는 죽음. 그 앞에 놓인 비통함을 첼로와 오케스트라로 담아낸 작품이다. 중반부에 나타나는 귀에 익은 선율은 곧 애국 열사들의 “이야기”를 대변한다. 선율의 움직임과 그 선율의 음색 변화는 곧 탄식의 노래 안에 담긴 “이야기”이며, 모든 Section은 단편적 “이야기”에 각기 다른 “음색”과 표현방법으로 변화된다. 작품에 나타나는 모든 음악적 요소는 감추어지지 않고, 다소 솔직하게 표현되고 있다. 이것은 곧 우리의 “이야기”이자 그때 그 시절의 “이야기”이다.
The cello concerto ‘Song of lament’ takes a step further from my previous chamber music piece ‘Clamor.’ This musical composition for cello and orchestra tells the story of patriotic martyrs whom we have forgotten, musically representing their lives and heroic deaths, and the grief that touched us all. The familiar melodic sequence in the middle phase represents their ‘story,’ and its progressions and tonal variations are what form the story. Each section tells a part of the story, which changes and leads to another through different musical tones and expressions. All the musical elements are not at all reserved and presented in a rather straightforward manner. This is the story of our times as well as the story of their times.
